The most venerated among all the stupa in Srilanka is the Ratnamali mahathupa, popularly known among the Sinhalese as the Ruvanvali Mahasaya. It was built by the great Sinhalese hero, king Dutugamunu during his reign between 161-137BC. The site is said to have been consecrated by Mahinda Mahathera and to have been marked by a pillar inscription set up by Devanampiya Tissa(250-210BC).King Dutugamunu built the Ruvanvali mahasaya.

Considering the circumference of the great stupa to be 370feet,one could imagine the quantity of bricks laid down under the stupa for its foundation,so firm was the construction. The stupa was constructed in the forn of Bubbulakara, the bubble shape which is very common.King Dutugamunu died before complete the stupa. His brother(Saddhatissa) finished the stupa.
